This five metre square piece of fabric needs to be cut for a sewing project.
One three metre square piece and four one metre square pieces need to be cut from it.
When marking cut the cutting lines on the fabric, what is the minimum number of straight lines that needs to be drawn?

Hint 1

The straight lines must be vertical or horizontal, not diagonal.
Be sure to make use of the outer edge of the fabric to avoid drawing unnecessary lines.

If you draw a line from one end of the fabric to the other, you should make good use of it.

Hint 3

There are two ways to draw the lines.
One method has the large square in the centre of the fabric, and the other has it placed in one of the corners.

Super Hint

If you place the large square in the centre, you need to draw lines along each side of the square, going right to the edge of the fabric.
This will create the four small squares, one in each of the corners.
