Failing Scales

PUZZLE 007

Puzzle Location: Lipski's pâtisserie (Shelf at the back)

Here are two sets of digital scales.
Their displays are both broken in the same place, so the bottom-left part of a number dows not show up.
For example, the number '6' would appear as '5'.
The sugar being weighed is showing up one gram heavier than it is on the left-hand scales, and one gram lighter than it is on the right-hand scales.
What is the actual total number of grams of the sugar on both sets of scales?

Hint 1

Work out which numbers would not display properly due to the broken section.

Hint 2

The four numbers that would be affected by the broken section are 0, 2, 6 and 8.

Hint 3

Look at the numbers 0, 2, 6 and 8, and figure out which ones would turn into other numbers if their bottom-left did not display.

Super Hint

The scales on the right are displaying a weight that is one gram lighter than the correct weight.
The only number that would work here is '6'.
Try to work out the number on the left-hand scales using the same method.

Answer

The answer is '14'.
