The Money of Colour

PUZZLE 069

Puzzle Location: The Layman's Reserve bank (Mr Torre)

There is a wall with twelve sections that need to be painted red, blue and purple, just like the one in the picture.
A pot of paint for one section costs £10 for red, £10 for blue, and £30 for purple.
How much is the paint going to cost?
Try to figure out the minimum possible price.

Hint 1

You need enough paint to cover five red sections, five blue sections, and two purple sections.
If you just buy the same number o paint pots, it will cost £160.
See if you can work out a cheaper way.

Hint 2

Mixing red and blue makes purple.
The purple paint costs more than the red and blue paint, so let's do this without buying any purple.

Hint 3

You have to be careful of quantities when you're mixing colours.
If you mix one pot of red with one pot of blue, you end up with two pots' worth of purple.

Super Hint

The paint you need for the two purple sections can be made by mixing one pot of red paint with one pot of blue.
If you add up the number of red and blue pots you need, what is the total price?

Answer

The answer is '120'.
