In the Running

PUZZLE 176

Puzzle Location: Bulk Buyears' Bargain Basement

Five people, A, B, C, D and E, are talking about a marathon they ran.
They were part o the first wave of runners, and all of them finished in the top five.
Can you work out from their comments which order they finished in?
Touch the runners' silhouettes to see their comments, and slide the silhouettes around on the winner's podium to line all the runners up in the order they finished the race.

Hint 1

It's not only the finishing line-up that's unknowsn, but the starting line-up too.
You need to consider them both at the same time.
What we know for sure is that D finished in second place.

Hint 2

E overtook three people.
This means that E must have moved from fifth place to second place, or from fourth place to first place.

Hint 3

Continuing on from hint two...
D finished in second place, so the option of E finishing second is not possible.
That means that E must have moved from fourth place to first place.
Considering those two facts, the only position that ties in with B's comment that they did not overtake and were not overtaken is fifth, so B must have been fifth.

Super Hint

Continuing on from hint three...
The only position that could have remained the same despite the runner overtaking and being overtaken is third place.
This means that A must have been third.
Now just fill in the final answer.

Answer
